Mental

 

There are many physical things that can give us pleasure or can harm us, but one of the strongest influences on our welfare is our mental state.

Two people can have the same thing happen to them – good or bad – but the impact on them can be totally different, depending on how they deal with it mentally.

There is really no real external way of stating if something is good or bad in any case – much of this depends on the outlook of the person to whom it happens.

This is because our mental state affects what we expect, and how we look at outcomes.

When we are totally focused on one thing – our career, our collection of memorabilia, even such “good” things as looking after our home or our loved ones – this is all that we mentally have room for.

So if anything else comes along that might, actually, be a better thing, we have no mental room to take it on board, and it slips away.

We can sometimes be so preoccupied with out own issues, that anything new is too much of a burden to us.

We can look at it as just one more thing that we have to cope with, one more problem to be solved.

In that mental state it is not really possible to see what is good, because anything more we take on will just add to our mental load, and we fear that we will sink under the weight of it all.

And yet there is a solution.

Because we are not totally at the mercy of our mental state – we may not be able to think ourselves into a better mental state, but we can act ourselves there.

When it is all seeming too much, maybe we need to admit that it is, take a break, and spend time in things that help us grow, rather than keep us under.

This can often be achieved by taking an actively thankful viewpoint – even when we don;t really mean it, just the act of giving thanks can help our mental world view.

By taking time to develop a positive outlook – even when all seems pointless – we can work our way out of the negative spiral.

Our mental state can help us to see the positives in more things around us, which in turn improves our mental state – a virtuous circle, that starts with one simple act of thankfulness.
